Introduction
Internal links don’t suddenly “break”. They decay. Slowly, quietly, and usually in places people don’t look.
On mature sites, the problem is rarely the absence of links. It’s that links stop functioning as reinforcement signals. Pages remain reachable, crawlable, even indexed — but authority propagation weakens to the point where nothing downstream moves.
I’ve seen this pattern repeatedly on sites with tens or hundreds of thousands of URLs. Rankings stall, reindexing slows, internal changes have diminishing returns. People add more links. Nothing happens.
That’s not because internal links stopped existing. It’s because they stopped passing usable signal.
Links don’t pass weight. Systems pass confidence
The “link juice” metaphor is convenient, but misleading. Modern search systems don’t move a fixed quantity of authority through edges. They accumulate confidence through repeated, consistent signals.

The three conditions where links stop reinforcing

On large content sites I’ve audited, the numbers are surprisingly consistent.
- Pages with stable rankings typically receive internal links from 3–8 high-frequency sources.
- Pages linked only from paginated archives or filtered views show 30–60% longer indexation latency.
- After structural cleanup (not link volume increase), reprocessing time drops by 2–4 weeks.
These are not lab numbers. They come from log analysis and before/after comparisons across multiple domains.

Why adding more links often makes it worse
This is the part people resist.
When links stop reinforcing, adding more links usually increases ambiguity. The system now has to decide which link matters. If nothing in the structure clarifies intent, the safest option is to delay change.

When internal links actually work again
Internal links start passing usable signal only when three things align:
- the target URL is the clear representative of an intent,

- the surrounding graph stops producing near-duplicates.
