Australian Webmaster http://australianwebmaster.com Just another WordPress site Thu, 26 Jan 2012 07:45:14 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.3.1 Improving WordPress Site Structure http://australianwebmaster.com/improving-wordpress-site-structure/ http://australianwebmaster.com/improving-wordpress-site-structure/#comments Mon, 23 Jan 2012 08:00:58 +0000 admin http://australianwebmaster.com/?p=444 An often-overlooked part of on-page SEO is the wordpress site structure. A simple and easy to navigate structure with obvious navigational links on blogs is fundamental to keep users on the site enabling them to easily browse around the site. When developing a wordpress site, this should actually be one of the first things you make sure that you get right. Make sure to use important keywords when building the category structure so that you can easily archive posts in relevant categories. Having a good site structure ensures that the flow of link juice obtained from backlinks goes to your most important money pages on your site.

That’s why undertaking SEO keyword research is so important in the early phase of a project. Once you have a list of 10-20 core keywords you want to rank for, you can structure your site around those keywords. Make sure to target the top 1-3 keywords on the homepage, since it is considered the most important page of your site as it generally always attracts the most number of backlinks. You also want to think of a good way to categorize the information on your blog.

When targeting other important keywords, which are less competitive then the home page keywords, the inner pages should be as close to the homepage as possible. For example, your secondary keywords could be linked directly from the homepage so that the link juice will flow to those pages. Generally the further the page is from the home page the less authority it has. This is only not true when the page has many backlinks to the specific page.

As your site grows, the key is to continually monitor which pages produce the most money and best interaction with blog visitors so that you can link to the most popular pages in the top navigation to ensure link juice flows to the most important pages of your site.

This can easily be done with the Popular Posts wordpress plugin, which displays the most popular posts in the sidebar of your blog.

Great navigation and site structure that supports the searcher also helps visitors stay on your site for longer. The more time visitors spend on your site, the more likely they are to become loyal readers that will go on to buy whatever you’re selling. Installing the Similar Posts or Related Posts plugin in WordPress allows you to display a highly configurable list of related posts at the end of your posts. If the searcher likes the post they just read, the chances are they will like other articles on the same subject.

So with all of these great wordpress plugins it allows you to quickly optimize the site structure of any wordpress blogs, so there is no reason not to do it.

How To Be Relevant in Search Engines! http://australianwebmaster.com/how-to-be-relevant-in-search-engines/ http://australianwebmaster.com/how-to-be-relevant-in-search-engines/#comments Mon, 23 Jan 2012 07:48:07 +0000 admin http://australianwebmaster.com/?p=438 Relevance is the key to high quality backlinks. It makes sense for google to give more weight to links from a relevant domain/page because it’s a much more natural link in the eyes of google. If you were doing link building for your site and google wasn’t in the picture, would you be trying to obtain links from sites that weren’t related to your site? I doubt it.
Having a large number of relevant high page rank pages pointing to your page is the best way to impress google to get some google love. But when obtaining links to your pages, don’t just consider the PR of a page, think about the relevance of the site/page.

The Page Rank system does not consider the relevance of links, and Google looks at various non-PR factors to judge relevance. They use anchor text (the text which is used to link to a webpage) and I suspect that they are also using other types of semantic analysis to determine the link relevance, such as the surrounding text on the page. This is why lower PR pages can outrank higher PR pages.

So when analyzing the competitiveness of a particular keyword, not only do you want to look at the number and quality of links pointing to a page, but also look the anchor text of the links to consider how many relevant links you will need to outrank your competitors.

Even if the #1 page you want to outrank has a lot of links pointing directly to the page, if a lot of the links are not targeting the keyword you are trying to rank for, then its going to be a lot easier ranking for that keyword with fewer quality keyword rich backlinks.

Authority websites like about.com have thousands of links pointing to their site, and hence have many high PR pages, but considering relevance is an important part of the algorithm for ordering websites, if google feels that your page is more relevant for the search query you will outrank the authority site to claim the number one position on google, sending you huge quantities of targeted visitors at the same time.\

So don’t get discouraged when a keyword you want to target seems fairly competitive. Obviously it helps when your competitors have weak backlinks, but if there are authority websites in your niche market, a lot of the time these pages are ranking based on domain authority alone but can be beaten.

On further analysis, quite often there isn’t many links pointing to the specific page so there is an opportunity to outrank them if you can get more relevant links to your website.

You will make life easier for yourself if you target the toughest keyword(s) – multiple keywords if they are related – on the home page, which is considered the most important page of a site.

Guest Blogging To Build Quality Links http://australianwebmaster.com/guest-blogging-to-build-quality-links-2/ http://australianwebmaster.com/guest-blogging-to-build-quality-links-2/#comments Mon, 23 Jan 2012 07:24:11 +0000 admin http://australianwebmaster.com/?p=428 Without a doubt guest blogging would have to be the best way to get powerful contextual links. Not only is it good for SEO and link building, but when done on high traffic blogs in your niche it means you gain maximum exposure in front of a highly targeted audience. You would be surprised just how many blogs accept guest posts from bloggers.

How To Find Blogs

In searching for guest blogging opportunities the first thing you want to do is to find blogs that are closely related to your niche. If you are in a narrow niche then you can always broaden the scope of your search and look for blogs that talk about similar subjects.

There are various ways to find niche bloggers in your industry but the best way to do it is by getting creative with advanced google searches, using google blog search, searching blog directories as well as using guest blogging communities like MyBlogGuest.

Search Engines

Search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing are one of the best ways to find related blogs in your niche. All you have to do is to use some advanced search engine operators to find targeted blogs that accept guest posts.

If a blog accepts content from guest authors, typically they will use common guest blogging key phrases. Below are some examples of what you could search for:

Your niche “Write for us”
Your niche “Submit article”
Your niche “Submit post”
Your niche “Guest posts”
Your niche “Guest blogging”
Your niche “Guest posting”

You should know that there are a lot of other effective searches to find targeted blogs. For example, when doing a search on google.com type: inurl:blog “write for us” “keyword”. Use broader keywords so that you can find a large number of sites in your niche.

Google Blog Search

Google can be a great way to find niche blogs. If you have exhausted your options when performing advanced search queries, check out Google Blog Search, which is essentially a blog directory to help you locate related blogs. Time and time again I have found hidden gems that I wasn’t aware of doing normal searches on Google.

Considerations When Guest Blogging

Even if a blog doesn’t directly state on their website that they accept guest posts doesn’t mean they won’t want good content! Search for blogs in your niche and related niches and contact them to see if they would be interested in content. You’d be surprised just how many blog owners don’t have the time to update their blogs and would jump at the opportunity at publishing a guest post that was unique and informative. In return, you get contextual links for your site that help with rankings and also give you more exposure. I would write better articles especially for blogs that would send the most link juice, it makes sense to dedicate more time to obtain more powerful content links. You should also be prepared to write a decent article to ensure that it gets published with your links.

Another thing to consider with guest blogging is the frequency of updates from the blog owner. If the blog is not updated frequently, quite often your blog post with the embedded text link can remain on the homepage for a long period of time, even months at a time, which is sending you a lot more link juice then if the blog post was to drop off the blog home page and end up archived in a deeper category page.

Essential Tips For Effective Blogging http://australianwebmaster.com/essential-tips-for-effective-blogging/ http://australianwebmaster.com/essential-tips-for-effective-blogging/#comments Wed, 11 Jan 2012 09:46:31 +0000 admin http://australianwebmaster.com/?p=362 How To Create A Blogging Schedule

When you decide to blog for a living you are working for yourself and, to succeed, you need to know how to create a blogging schedule. If you have always generated a salary by working for someone else, daily routines and tasks were already in place when you arrived, so you could just go along by fulfilling the duties in your job description each day.

When blogging, however, it is up to you as a sole proprietor to develop strategies and schedules on your own, and to see to it that they are carried out on a daily basis. Some people, when beginning to blog, aren’t used to the freedom of working from home and they can quickly fail if they don’t recognize that they still need to work full time in order to generate an income. Creating a blogging schedule helps you set goals and clearly lays out what must be done each day in order to achieve those goals.

A blogging schedule should reflect everything you need to initially do, from developing a new blog to researching a product or products for a blog post you intend to write. Schedules should also include important marketing strategies, such as creating smaller articles that will be created as backlinks to your blog post or sending emails to blog subscribers.
Social sharing should be a part of every blogger’s schedule, so be sure to include sharing your article on sites such as Facebook or Twitter each day.

Keyword research and identifying potential new topics is very important to keep a continual flow of new content being created, so be sure to set aside time in your schedule where you research keywords and visit forums in your niche, to identify problems and potential future topics (can be a great promotional tool, too). You alone will determine just what needs to be included in your blogging schedule, which can be created to cater to your individualized needs.

The importance of scheduling daily blog tasks is that you are growing your business every day, increasing your odds of success, in a timely and efficient matter without missing a step.

Finding and Installing Essential WordPress Plugins

Here is a list of a few essential plugins that every WordPressuser should definitely install.

First off there is Akismet, a program which simply filters out all the spam and junk comments out of your blog; it basically takes out all the garbage for you.

The second plugin you should install is the Broken Links Remover which basically scans all the links you have on your website and gives you a list of the ones that are broken so you don’t have to do all the work manually. Another essential plugin which every WordPress blogger should have is the Cbnet Ping Optimizer, an application that sends a ping to all the search engines every time you make a new post or a noteworthy update… this will save you a lot of time on boring and repetitive labor so you can concentrate on more important tasks.

If you are not too keen on configuring the SEO of your website by yourself then you should definitely consider installing the All in One SEO Pack, which is basically a plugin that does all the boring SEO stuff on your webpage for you; all you need to do is simply fill out a basic form that will give the plugin all it needs. If you want to increase the number of real comments on your blog then you should look into installing CommentLuv, a plugin which allows users who post comments to display a link back to their last blog post; if people are going to have the opportunity to direct attention to their own blog through yours, chances are they will be paying more attention to it.

Finally, you need to give your readers a fast and easy way of contacting you which is exactly what the Fast Secure Contact Form is for; it will allow your users to contact you fast and easy straight to your inbox all while filtering out the spam and bot messages.

Finding and Installing A WordPress Theme

OK – you made the wise decision to host your blog on WordPress, now what?

The next thing on your list should be to find the WordPress theme that you want. The reason that WordPress has become so popular is the fact that you can literally do anything with it. However, in order to do a lot of that stuff, you need to have programming skills that most people don’t have. That is where a new theme come in.

The people that do have those programming skills create theme templates that can dramatically increase the functionality of your blog. It also makes it much easier for you to customize. You can always choose to use the standard WordPress theme that came with your blog, but that will make your site look exactly like everyone else’s and it will limit the functionality you have.

Getting a great theme lets you use the programming skills of the person who designed the theme. The first thing you have to do is decide if you want a free theme or a premium theme.

As you can imagine, there are more features available on a premium theme, but there are also many free themes available that are more that sufficient, depending on your plans for your blog. All you have to do to find your new theme is a basic Google search, “WordPress themes” will give you all the options you need. You used to have to learn how to FTP files to install a new theme, but WordPress has made it a whole lot easier.

Now, all you have to do is download the theme file to your computer and browse to add it to WordPress. Inside the back end of your WordPress site, to go Appearance (along the left side column) and Themes.

Then click on Install Themes, then Upload.

Browse to find the zipped file you downloaded and click Install Now.

After you activate the theme, you can have fun playing with all of the new options that you now have.

How To Develop Your “Voice” On Your Blog

When you are writing online for your blog you will need to develop a certain style that will identify you, that you are going to stick by… most people refer to this as developing your own “voice” as an internet writer. If you want to develop your voice as a writer, the first thing you are going to have to do is determine the types of emotions you are going to want to convey and start writing your text based on that; after having tried out various styles you will find one that suits you better than the others.

The second thing you need to do in order to develop your voice is to practice writing much more often. Write about anything and always try to adhere to your style; the more you practice writing the better your ability to express your ideas will become. Another way of developing your voice would involve looking at the works of some blog writers which you admire and take various pointers from them; remember though that your aim is to create your own unique style so be very careful not to take too much from someone, or else you will simply be labeled as a wannabe.

If you are having trouble finding the proper words to express your ideas, then the best thing you could do is simply write everything down the way you would explain to someone; this will allow you to easily get your ideas down on paper while making them easy to understand.

Finally, the development of your own style will depend on the life and experiences you have had; you should try to include some of your own opinions and experiences into the articles you write as it will not only distinguish you from run-of-the-mill writers, but it will also allow your audience to connect with you much more easily.

How To Encourage People To Comment On Your Blog Posts

If you own a blog and want to ensure that it has an active community then you have probably often found yourself wondering how to encourage blog comments on your blog. The most obvious way to encourage comments on blog posts is to ask for them by placing a question for discussion at the bottom of the post. You may also want to want to place an additional simpler version of your discussion question somewhere just after the first paragraph to warm up the reader for the discussion.

The question for discussion should relate heavily to the subject being discussed in the blog post and should concentrate on some point you mentioned in your post that different people could have a wide variety of different opinions on.

By focusing on a question that people will have different opinions on you will find that your blog commentators will begin discussing their answers between themselves. Another way to encourage discussion in your blog comments is to include a lot of your own opinions in your posts. Opinions tend to be highly subjective, and other people will have their own subjective opinions and will feel compelled to share them in the comments. This will lead to commentators commenting on each other’s opinions and can lead to some dynamic and interesting discussions in the comment section.

Posting about controversial topics can also lead to some active discussions in the comments area of your blog. People love controversy, and love to discuss their own opinions on it. Because controversy tends to be highly topical, you may find your blog post attracting a lot of search engine traffic from people searching for information on the subject of the controversy, or searching for a place to discuss it. Avoid making controversial posts that are just designed to misinform and stir up trouble though, as these type of posts will just build a bad reputation for your site.

A better approach is to openly play devils advocate on a controversial topic to encourage discussion from different viewpoints. By applying some imagination in incorporating discussion material into your posts, you will find that your blog can become a hive of interesting discussion for your community.

Easy Tips to Start an Effective Blog http://australianwebmaster.com/easy-tips-to-start-an-effective-blog/ http://australianwebmaster.com/easy-tips-to-start-an-effective-blog/#comments Wed, 11 Jan 2012 09:30:32 +0000 admin http://australianwebmaster.com/?p=361 How to Easily Set Up Your Blog With WordPress

If you’re worried about setting up your blog, don’t be. WordPress has made it very easy for you, which is one of the reasons why that blog script is so popular. So let’s get started.

There are two ways you can set up your WordPress blog:

* An easy way (if you know how to do it)

* And an even easier way (if you have no prior knowledge about setting up scripts)

Sounds good, doesn’t it?

If you don’t know how to upload files, chances are that your web host has made it really simple for you to set up your WordPress blog anyway. So let’s take a look at the most painless way to set up a WordPress blog.

This is how you do:

1: Log into your cPanel.

2: Navigate down to the Fantastico icon (it looks like a smiling face, and it might be called Fantastico De Luxe).

3: Click on it, and find WordPress in the blog group at the top.

4: After you’ve clicked on the WordPress link, click on New Installation, and locate your domain on the pull-down menu.

5: If you want to install your blog directly in the root of the directory, leave the field “Install in Directory” empty.

If that is the case, you will go to your blog, when you type your domain in the Address Bar of your browser, like http://mydomain.com. If you want to have your blog in a folder on your domain (like http://mydomain.com/blog/), you should enter the name of the folder in the field, e.g. here “blog”.

Beware that the folder must not exist already.

6: Write an administrator name and password in the fields below.

7: Fill in the fields with the basic information about your blog, like the administrator’s name, the blog’s name, etc.

8: Click on the button “Install WordPress” and then on “Finish Installation”. You’re done.

As you can see, the lack of technical knowledge is no longer an excuse for not getting your own blog.

Everybody can do it with Fantastico.

Keyword Research for Blog Posts

Keyword research is one of the most important pieces to your online business, but it is also one of the most overlooked. The truth is you can have great content on your blog that provides real value to your readers, but if your keyword research is bad it won’t matter because no one is ever going to see it.

Keyword research is how you get your blog posts ranked by the search engines so people will actually see them. Picking the right words can get you ranked, picking the wrong words can put your post on page 137. The key to keyword research is finding words that have a decent amount of traffic, but that also don’t have very much competition. If you reach the number 1 spot for a keyword that has no traffic, it doesn’t help your blog at all.

On the flip side, if you spend your time trying to rank for a keyword that has too much competition, it could take years before you see any results. The best option is usually to focus your blog posts on “long tailed keywords”.

What this means is that instead of writing a blog post about “dog collars” (which will have a huge amount of competition), you should write about “red leather dog collars”.  The large pet stores likely have the highest rankings for dog collars and you will never be able to compete. You will have a much better chance of getting ranked for long tailed keywords rather than the short ones.

After you begin to achieve high rankings for multiple keywords and your blog starts building credibility with Google and the other search engines, you can begin to target keywords that are a little more competitive.
Of course, you also need to pick keywords that are relevant to your blog.  If you’re writing a post about picking relevant keywords, it won’t help you at all to be ranked for “how to set up a blog”.

How to Track Your Blog Stats Using Google Analytics

By learning more about the stats that are related to your blog, you will be able to easily improve the overall layout and the type of content that is on your blog in order to attract more visitors, and in order to improve the advertising and marketing done on the blog.

Google Analytics is a program that will help online users attain the information that they are looking for regarding their blog, and if you are interested in learning how to track your blog stats using Google Analytics, consider adding Google’s script in the top heading of your blog. While the script is invisible and cannot be seen, it will begin to track many aspects that are related to your blog including the demographics of the visitors accessing the blog, the duration of time that is spent on the blog, and even the type of visitors who are clicking on ads and the location of ads that are most prominently clicked. The information that is provided by Google Analytics has been used for evaluative purposes for many companies and provides a good deal of insight and information for those who are interested in learning more about the different affects that their blogs have on their visitors.

Google Analytics is also able to provide information regarding where the visitors are coming from giving bloggers a better idea on where to continue advertising and where to stop. It is also able to provide information regarding the condition of the blog, and the type of popularity it has in comparison with its competitors.

The best part about this is that Googly Analytics is free! It provides an immense amount of information at no cost at all, and if you are learning how to track your blog stats using Google Analytics, you will find that the whole user interface is easy to access and understand making it one of the best resources around.

How To Stay Inspired To Write Your Blog

Learning how to stay inspired to write your blog is an important skill to learn, which you should think about before you even begin blogging, if you are planning to earn a living online. Successfully blogging for a living is something that doesn’t happen overnight, and it requires a substantial amount of dedication and hard work. Because it can take so long to begin generating enough revenue to live on, many bloggers lose inspiration and may even stop blogging altogether.

Often this may happen because new bloggers weren’t prepared, having no idea how much effort was involved, or they may have thought they would see more income generated than what actually appeared. To stay inspired to write your blog, you need to keep your eye on the prize and recognize that you are laying the foundation for the long term goal of earning passive income online.

There will come a day when all of your hard work begins to really pay off, and you can enjoy a vacation or slow down your pace while still receiving revenue from many income streams. This is the most inspirational point to consider when blogging, so visualize that there will come a day when income is streaming in from all of the work you are doing right now.

To stay inspired, use visual imagery, such as the work involved in building a skyscraper – it begins with absolutely nothing and is a slow process, but the end result is a phenomenal structure. This is how blogging grows, very slowly and one brick at a time, but knowing that in the end all of this work will change your life, and is well worth it.

That said, you may not have inspiration to work on your blog because you are not interested or engaged in the topic, finding it dull and a struggle to write about each day. You don’t have to go for the “big ticket” topics to be a success in the blogging world so, to stay inspired, be sure to focus on a niche that you enjoy writing and talking about, or you’ll increase the likelihood of giving up on this amazing opportunity to create a substantial passive income online.

How To Get Guests To Write Posts For Your Blog Building

Building a successful blog in any niche is all about producing high quality content that your readers will be genuinely interested in, but writing all that content yourself can be time-consuming and tedious. Of course, you can outsource most of the work and have other people write the articles for you, but this can be expensive if you don’t have a big budget (and most beginner marketers don’t have this kind of budget).

Writing the article yourself and paying other people to write the articles for you are not the only options available to you, however. An excellent way to add high-quality content is to find guest writers who are willing to submit good articles to your blog in exchange for a link to their websites. Not only will this make your job easier when it comes to producing fresh and interesting content for your readers, but it can also add to the overall quality and credibility of the blog by having multiple expert authors contributing their own insights and opinions.

Finding these guest writers can be as easy as contacting other bloggers who are already established in your niche and telling them that you will begin accepting their high-quality content in exchange for links. If you have a good readership with lots of people subscribing to your RSS feeds or e-mail lists and participating in blog comments, then you can simply make an announcement on your blog and tell people that you will be accepting quality articles.

If you don’t know where to begin, start by looking at the blogs that show up in Google and in blog directories and begin contacting them one by one. This is a much better option than simply publishing articles that you find in article directories because guest writers will be writing original content and the quality tends to be higher as well.

Best Tips for Blogging Success http://australianwebmaster.com/best-tips-for-blogging-success/ http://australianwebmaster.com/best-tips-for-blogging-success/#comments Wed, 11 Jan 2012 09:12:56 +0000 admin http://australianwebmaster.com/?p=353 How to Stay Focused On Your Blog For The Long Haul

Like most people, you probably already know what a blog is. And like most people, you probably don’t get any traffic to your blog, unless it’s from family and friends. When blogging first started out years ago you could put up a few posts with a little seo and get a flood of visitors to your site.

Nowadays, the stakes have changed. Blogging is no longer something new and unique. It’s a lot more competitive to get readers because there are so many blogs out there. The good news is that you can get plenty of traffic and visitors if you stay focused on your blog for the long haul.

Most people give up too easily when they’re first starting out their blogs. They still want to believe that they can just set up a blog and watch groves of visitors come to it. In reality, you now have to create unique content that you’ve worked hard on. You need to decide up front that you want your blog to be a staple in your online business. You’ve got to decide that you want to create the best quality you can.

By sacrificing with some hard work in the short-term, you’ll quickly gain a lot of exposure in the long-term. Eventually you’ll have a lot of people coming to your blog because they’ll be able to see the quality of information that you’re offering. By doing it the right way at first, you’ll create a business instead of a get rich quick site.

You’ll be able to form lasting relationships with your customers that will eventually result in repeat business. By working hard and doing the necessary things the right way, your efforts will be rewarded. Once people find a blog that has high quality content that is used with your own personal voice, they’ll be more likely to stick around and read what you have to say.

Why You Should Build An E-mail List From Your Blog

Building an e-mail list is one of the most important things you can do to help your online business succeed, and this certainly applies to blogging as well. You can certainly make money without the e-mail list by simply having affiliate links on your blog posts or making money with Google Adsense, banner ads, and other forms of advertisements.

If you don’t have a subscriber list, however, you’re simply not making the most of your online business. When someone visits your website, chances are they’re not going to immediately buy your e-book or make a purchase  through your affiliate link.

People usually have to see your sales offers multiple times before they make a purchase, and it always helps to build trust and relationships on the Internet. With this in mind, an e-mail list can give you an opportunity to present affiliate recommendations or other offers multiple times to your subscribers even if they don’t make you money the first day they land on the website. Not only can an e-mail list give you additional opportunities to make sales, but it can also keep your subscribers coming back to your blog time and time again.

You can let your subscribers know when you have published a new high-quality article on your blog, then your followers will keep returning to your site to read your interesting and helpful articles and perhaps end up clicking on an ad that makes you money.

This strategy can help build a long-term authority site with the community of devoted followers who simply love to come to your blog on a regular basis (and perhaps tell their friends and families about your blog as well so it can continue to grow in popularity).

They key is to build relationships by not constantly sending sales offers, but instead providing plenty of helpful content along the way.

Why It’s Important To Reply To All Comments On Your Blog

One of the common mistakes that people make with their own blog is not paying enough attention to the comments people leave. They either don’t respond or they take too long to post a reply. Or even worse, they don’t allow people to post comments at all. Those are all big mistakes and you are about to find out why.

The first benefit to replying to all of the comments that people leave is that it proves you are a real person. People prefer to deal with people rather than businesses that don’t have a face. Replying to comments makes you more real and they will begin to think you have more of a connection. When they feel more connected, they are more likely to trust you and the products and services you recommend.

Making personal replies to the comments also shows that you are interested. People will be more likely to leave comments or to ask questions if they are convinced they will actually get a response.

Another big benefit to replying to each comment that someone leaves is that it adds another comment to your blog. The search engine like to see that people are interested in your content and having a large number of comments (even though half of them are your replies) will get you ranked higher in the search engines.

If you pay attention to the reply you give to each comment, you can get even more of a benefit. Instead of just giving a standard answer, you can also include a question or an interesting comment. This will likely produce another response from the person who originally posted. It will also prompt additional discussion from other people who are reading the comments.

If you have a blog, remember to pay attention to the comments, and respond to every one.   It helps your search rankings and will keep people coming back for more.

5 Smart Blogging Tips http://australianwebmaster.com/5-smart-blogging-tips/ http://australianwebmaster.com/5-smart-blogging-tips/#comments Wed, 11 Jan 2012 08:59:17 +0000 admin http://australianwebmaster.com/?p=338 How To Choose Your Blog’s Domain Name and Hosting

The success of your blog depends greatly on your choice of web hosting and your blog’s domain name as your domain name describes your business.  Though free domains are tempting, it’s better to get a paid domain for your blog as they are a more reliable option that makes you work harder at establishing your blog as you had paid for its domain.

Choose a domain name that has something related to your business to help people easily recognize and remember the niche of your business. Your domain name should be short, clear and memorable so that people can easily remember them to type into the browser while looking for your business. You can use your name as your domain name if you run a personal business as it makes it easier for you to build your online image.

It’s always better to choose and use a search engine friendly domain name so that you can compete with others to get a place in the top page search engine rankings. While choosing your web host, it is important you choose one that supports the script you use in your blog lest you end up spending more time correcting technical issues instead of blogging.

Sign up only with reliable hosts who have a competent customer support crew to help you, so that you don’t end up wasting time fixing any problems you may have. Choose a host based on your blogging needs, preferences and the intended purpose of your blog as some people use blogs as a personal journal while others use it to make money.

If you don’t know much about coding, it’s better to choose hosting companies that offer simple and no set-up blog interfaces. With the help of these tips, you will be able to choose the right domain name and hosting services that will help project your blog’s online presence.

How To Choose A Niche For Your Blog In 3 Simple Steps

Learning how to choose a niche for your blog is one of the most important things that you can do to get your blog setup for long term growth and success.

The good news is that this can quiet often be done in 3 quick and easy steps as we shall see.

Step 1 – It is important that you choose a topic that you are interested in because you either already know a lot about it or it should be a topic that you have a strong interest in learning about The reason for this is because to be successful blogging you will need to spend a lot of time immersed in your topic.

This could involve doing keyword research and writing articles for your niche or it could be doing link building by making forum or blog post with helpful comments that drive traffic back to your blog. This is why it is very important to learn how to choose a niche for your blog before you make the mistake of choosing a niche solely for the purpose of making money.

Step 2 – Next because we do live in a money based society, you should do some market and keyword research to make sure that there is a large enough buyers market with low enough competition, for it to be profitable for you.

Step 3 – Look for a way that you can be a unique and valuable contributor to this niche. It is important that you identify what will set you and your blog apart from all of the other blogs currently online This could be something as basic as your commitment to high quality information or your ability to tell things in an interesting and exciting new way.

By starting with these 3 simple steps you will develop a very good understanding of how to choose a niche for your blog.

How to Position Yourself As the Expert Using Your Blog

Have you ever wondered how you could make yourself stand out as THE expert in your niche?

Some people think it’s all about using long, difficult words to impress their readers with their immense knowledge.

It’s not.

In fact, studies have shown that readers in general see people, who write in a way that is hard to understand, as stupid. If you can explain a difficult topic with simple words, you will show your expertise in a way that your readers will appreciate.

But there is more to it. Can you imagine going to a lawyer and ask him a tough juridical question about an incident that is only likely to happen once in 1,000 years, and then get an answer straight away without him consulting books or other lawyers?

If a lawyer behaved like that, would you see him as a true expert?  Or rather like someone who has a very fragile ego, and who feels threatened by others? It’s a strange fact that by using other people’s opinions on your blog, you stand out as the expert, because it shows that you dare to face opponents. Using other people’s opinions on your blog in between your text has a name. It’s called “curation”.

One way to use curation is to first find a topic, you have a great deal of knowledge about. Pick one issue within that topic. Let’s say your blog is about dog training, and you want to stand out as THE expert when it comes to stopping your dog from barking. Find quotes or videos that agree with your way of training a dog, and find opposing videos or quotes.

Write your blog post like you would normally do, using simple words, and then point to opinions who are contrary to yours, and tell your readers why you disagree. Then add the opinions that second your point of view, and tell your readers why you agree with them.

Summon it all up with a conclusion. A blog post written that way will position yourself as the expert, especially if you write a lot of other blog posts about similar topics.

How To Form JVs With Other Bloggers

Nowadays, having a blog JV with other bloggers is crucial for increasing your “mini- internet empire”.

A good JV with other bloggers means “you’ll promote my stuff and I’ll promote yours.” Before finding bloggers to form JVs with, you should see if your blog is professional enough and has a relatively good PR and Alexa Ranking.

Find other bloggers on Google that are willing for a JV and send them a message or leave them a comment on their post, asking if you two could collaborate. Each blogger is specialized in a field, so try to mix up with other bloggers that know better than you what to do in the field you are a beginner.

Collaborating with other bloggers is the easiest and the fastest path to success, because two or more are powerful than just one. You should have at least one expert blogger on article marketing, who can easily increase your traffic and sell your products or services to the “online eager customers” You need to find trustful bloggers to form JVs with, people who won’ t change your password whenever they want or even worser won’ t steal your work to sell it to other bloggers.

Forming  JVs With Other Bloggers is a much easier and faster way to learn, especially as you have expert bloggers to teach and mentor some tips you don’ t know yet. And lastly, keep in touch with your blogger mates and try to know them personally, making them your close friends.

How To Beat Writers Block For Bloggers

After you’ve blogged for a while you can start to feel that things are getting a little stale, and you need to figure out how to beat writers block.  You may have heard about famous writers who had no trouble churning out a couple of masterpieces but all of a sudden couldn’t get a word on paper.

For a blogger, it can be tough coming up with fresh ideas, and the advice for prose writers with a blockage is good for bloggers too, but it doesn’t go far enough – learn to relax your mind, keep a dream journal, and so on.  Bloggers have special tools at their disposal, special talents, and special needs, so here are some tips on how to rid yourself of blogger’s block.

You should keep a list of topics and themes in a nearby notebook or on the computer so you can jot down ideas as they occur to you – you don’t want that great niche notion to slip away by clicking on the next link and forgetting it.  Let your mind and mouse wander through your favorite blogs and forums for the latest trends, hot topics, and new ideas – but try going to new sites too.

Amazon’s bestseller lists are a potential treasure trove of ideas – scan the lists in all kinds of categories, not just the ones you’re familiar with, for new products – you never know what you’ll find.  Once you know how to do keyword research (and don’t use just your favorite – try out others), you can use it as an idea tool – search on a broad topic or concept and scan the results for a mental reboot, taking notes of course. One way for all you slow typists out there to break through a dry spell is to use voice recognition software to transcribe yourself talking, or use the old-fashioned method of recording and transcribing – some bloggers talk faster than they type.

Finally, if you’re really stuck, go to a real bookstore, get a good cup of coffee or tea, and scan the shelves and titles for new subjects, and twists on old ones – after all, those writers probably had writer’s block at some point too.

Easy But Effective Ways To Promote Your Blog http://australianwebmaster.com/easy-but-effective-ways-to-promote-your-blog/ http://australianwebmaster.com/easy-but-effective-ways-to-promote-your-blog/#comments Wed, 11 Jan 2012 08:30:53 +0000 admin http://australianwebmaster.com/?p=327 How To Promote Your Blog Using Facebook

One of the most effective ways one could take to promote their blog and generate traffic has actually come out only recently in the form of Facebook, the most popular social network to this day.

The first thing that you can do in order to generate traffic using Facebook is to create a business profile on the website and simply place a link in it that leads back to your blog along with an explanation as to what your readers can hope to find on your website; it needs to sound authentic and inspire trust, because otherwise people will simply ignore it.

The second thing you could do on Facebook in order to generate traffic to your blog is to make more and more friends; the more you socialize, the more you will have people listed as friends the larger your potential audience will be, not to mention them being more likely to check your blog out if they have some type of personal contact with you.

Third of all, you could actually start your own Facebook group which you can ask your friends to join and spread the word; the group page will basically contain information about your blog , similar to what you have on your profile page.

Another small way in which you could use Facebook to direct traffic towards your own blog is to come up with a few interesting bulletin posts per day, all of which will provide a snippet of some valuable information and then link back to your blog with the promise of more content.

Finally, if you plan on using your blog to sell some specific products then you should take advantage of the Facebook marketplace, which is a place that has been designed to specifically allow Facebook users to advertise and sell their products to each other, regardless of whether or not they are friends.

How To Promote Your Blog Using Twitter

Learning how to promote your blog using Twitter can help you to not only increase the traffic to your blog but also to help you increase your chances of your content going viral.

Twitter is one of the top social media sites on the net and there are literally millions of people sending and checking tweets everyday. Because the character limit is only 140 characters in length, you have to be creative in your tweets.   One of the most important things to remember is to always tweet about what is going on at your blog. This will show your audience that you are adding value with your tweets and not trying to sell stuff on twitter.

Another key to getting traffic to your blog using Twitter is to create curiosity tweets.  These should be short little tweets that say something like “looking for ways to do this or that ? Learn more at Youblogurl.

With these key points in mind let’s look at some addition things that can be done to drive traffic to your blog using Twitter.

These are some basic steps on how to promote your blog that you can follow :

1.) Sign up for an account on Twitter and include your blog url in your profile description.

2.) Search for groups in your niche and join those groups.

3.) Add the twitter plug-in to your blog.  This can be done with a wordpress plug-in or addthis.com plug-in.

4.) Ask readers to retweet your post for you.

5.) Create a fun contest, if you have the resources available. This may involve consulting with an attorney to make sure that all of the legal aspects are covered.

By incorporating as many of the above methods as possible for your blog, you will see a good increase in traffic to your blog as a result of learning how to promote your blog using Twitter.

Some Quick Tips On Ways To Promote Your Blog’s RSS Feed

One area of blog promotion that often gets overlooked is the RSS feed, but you will eventually find yourself wondering how to promote your blog’s RSS feed link to get better use out of this blogging feature.

The RSS feed link on most blogs is usually so innocuous that blog readers are rarely even aware that it exists, so your first priority should be to make it more visible on your website. Adding a large RSS feed button in a prominent place on you blog page template that you have reserved for subscription and social sharing links is a good place to begin. You should also include smaller buttons for these links at the bottom of each blog post, plus a bit of text at the end of each post to remind people that these subscription and sharing options exist, and to encourage them to use them.

It’s also a good idea to have a page on your website that explains to people what the RSS feed is (along with information on all the other subscription and sharing options), why it can make it easier for them to view your content, and how they can use it. By having a special page on your site with this information, you can link to this page in your blog posts and in your blog theme beneath your subscription and sharing buttons.

Another great way to promote your RSS feed is to use RSS feed directories. RSS feed directories are special directory websites that publish the contents of your RSS feed. Having your feed published at an RSS directory site means that the visitors to that site can find your content. It also means that any links to your content that are published with the feed will become backlinks to your website, which will encourage search engines to index and rank your blog.

You can find RSS directories by using a search engine to search for them using terms such as “RSS directory”, “RSS feed directory”, “RSS directory list”, “publish RSS feeds”, and many similar search keywords. You can probably find many more ways to promote your RSS feed by using your imagination and looking for places where it would be appropriate to post the feed link.

How To Guest Post To Promote Your Blog

There is no one best way in which you could promote your blog;  rather, there is a bunch of different ways to promote that all yield a result when put together, and something that can give your advertising a bit of an extra push is referred to as guest posting. When you are guest posting on other blogs you are basically making a post about a certain topic which pertains to that blog, on that blog… in exchange, you get to leave a URL leading back to your website which is quite an effective method of promotion that offers many advantages, yet a few rules need to be respected.

First of all, never make a low quality post or put up something completely unrelated, as not only will your post be deleted but your reputation will also end up being damaged in the eyes of those who had the time to read it.

Second of all, writing a guest post is a perfect chance to set yourself up as an authority figure when it comes to a certain topic, which is the main reason people should visit your site after they read the article; don’t mess this chance up by writing poorly or about a subject you are not familiar with.

Third of all, you need to make sure that the URL you leave is related to the topic which you are discussing; it doesn’t matter how much of an expert you are about the concerned subject if your blog has nothing to do with it.

Finally, you should look for blogs that have a high pagerank and receive heavy traffic rather than lesser ones as not only will more people be able to read your post, but the backlinks leading to your website from it will also be ranked higher by the search engines.

3 Effective Tips to Make Money with Blogs http://australianwebmaster.com/3-effective-tips-to-make-money-with-blogs/ http://australianwebmaster.com/3-effective-tips-to-make-money-with-blogs/#comments Wed, 11 Jan 2012 08:03:40 +0000 admin http://australianwebmaster.com/?p=321 How To Monetize Your Blog With AdSense

One of the most amazing benefits of blogging is the ability to earn money from writing about something you love, and at the same time inspiring more people to find out about your chosen topic.

A popular method of earning money from blogging in enrolling in the Google AdSense program, which allows you to earn money each time a visitor clicks on an advert on your blog. Implementing AdSense on a blog is very straightforward indeed, WordPress users can use a plugin such as Easy AdSense to manage the whole process automatically, and it even slots the ads into your content without you having to do so much as click a mouse!

The biggest strength of Google’s AdSense technology is its ability to match ads to content, using a process called contextual matching. Contextual matching allows the readers of your blog to see ads related to the article they are reading, for example a link to a camera store on the latest digital camera review. There are few (if any) other programs on the web which rival AdSense for revenue earned and ease of implementation, simply copy the ad code into your template or plugin and you’re ready to go!

Once you have had your ad code on the blog for a while you will start to see your statistics displayed in the AdSense control panel, such as the number of times your ads have been shown, how many were clicked, and how much you have earned. It is a good idea to set up ad channels once you have become familiar with the program, as they will allow you to break down where your revenue is being earned, and in turn give you ideas as to how you might earn more.

AdSense is a very simple monetization option for bloggers, so why
not give it a try to see how much you could earn?

How To Monetize Your Blog With Affiliate Programs

When you know how to monetize your blog with affiliate programs, you will quickly see that there is limitless earning potential for your online business. Some of the better known programs you may have heard of are Ebay and Amazon, and bloggers are making substantial income with these sites. But you can also become an affiliate for major retail stores or even sell items such as ebooks, through sites like Clickbank.

Amazon and Clickbank are perfect for those who are new to blogging, because they don’t require that your blog must have a lot of traffic or posts to be accepted into the program Other affiliate programs have lengthy applications and often the site won’t approve you until you have an active blog that is showing promise.

Don’t let this discourage you, however – start with an affiliate program, like Amazon, so you can start generating affiliate revenue early on, which will motivate you during the slow, early stages of blogging. However, visit websites and companies that would provide perfect affiliate products for your blog in the future, check if they have affiliate programs available and start writing down what their application process requires so that you remember to apply when the time is right.

As an example, if you had blogs that focused on pet products, you can begin by featuring Amazon items but in the long term, your goal might be to become an affiliate for a big chain like Petco or Petsmart once you meet their application criteria. In the short term, you can sign up to be an Amazon Associate very quickly, gaining fast approval and being well on your way to monetizing your blog.

Though many people use Amazon products to write reviews about, never underestimate the ability to provide Amazon’s merchandise as a casual link in your blog post, or even as a sidebar widget on your site. No matter which businesses you intend to apply to, to become an affiliate, once your blog is really generating traffic, be certain to diversify and not put all of your eggs in one basket (program), in the event that the company would cease offering programs for affiliates.

How To Monetize Your Blog With Amazon Associates

You may be familiar with monetizing your blog by generating ad revenue, but to maximize your blog’s earning potential, you also need to learn how to monetize your blog with Amazon Associates.

Becoming an Amazon Associate is very easy to do and has unlimited resources and help available to get you on the way to dramatically increasing your income earning potential quickly. Unlike ad sites, which often require that you have an already established site before considering your application, Amazon Associates lets you get started before having to prove you have a successful site.

When you join Amazon Associates, an important bonus is that you can use your main account to put links to affiliate products not only on your blog, but on other sites you may be using for backlinking, such as Squidoo, Hubpages and more. If you decide to put affiliate links to products on many different sites, Amazon allows you to create unique tracking ID’s so that you can accurately keep tabs on the progress each site is making, to know what is working and what isn’t.

Many bloggers make the mistake of not pursuing Amazon Associates because they believe it is all about product reviews, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Of course, selling affiliate products is perfect for product based sites, but successful Amazon Associates know that affiliate links can be used in many other ways. If you write a blog post about a particular famous person, for example, why not increase your chance of making more money by placing an affiliate link to a biographical book about that person.

Many bloggers also use Amazon Associates for the wonderful images that can be generated, because affiliates are given the choice to make an image or text link (or both, if so desired). Not only are Amazon commissions generous, increasing by the number of products you sell, they also allow you to make money whether you sell the item you featured on your blog or not!

This is the best part about Amazon because all you have to do is get someone to click through your link and, once they are on Amazon’s site, no matter what they buy, even if they didn’t buy the product you displayed, you still receive commission.

Tips on Writing a Great Blog Post http://australianwebmaster.com/tips-on-writing-a-great-blog-post/ http://australianwebmaster.com/tips-on-writing-a-great-blog-post/#comments Wed, 11 Jan 2012 07:38:58 +0000 admin http://australianwebmaster.com/?p=308 Mirror yourself in the “About Me” page of your blog

The first page most new visitors of your blog view is the “About Me” page.

This page should reflect your personality and the content or your blog. The people visit your bio page in order to know the person behind all the content in your blog. People take interest in reading blogs of people who they look up
to, like a celebrity; or someone they can relate with; or someone who shares the same interests as them; or someone who has a solution to their problems. Hence it is important to write about yourself and the purpose of your blog.

Now that we know why it is necessary to write an “About Me” page, let us look at how we can go about writing the page.
Let the page be a mirror of you and your blog, in simple terms, let it summarize you and the content on your blog. Blogs do not have to be formal, so is the bio page. Keep it as casual as possible, like how you would talk to a person you are meeting for the first time.  You can make it witty, people always gel well with lighthearted people.

Amongst all these, let the visitors understand your level of expertise in the content of your blog, for example, if your blog is about cooking for first timers, share your experiences in cooking as a first timer and that you have a solution to all the common mistakes one tends to make, since you have done exactly those mistakes yourself.  Mention your contact information, so that the people can reach out to you if needed. Include links to other websites where people can find you, for example, social networking sites. Include a photograph, it is always better to let people see you, than imagine you as a faceless person.

Make sure that you do not rumble on to give a complete biography, just highlight your personality and the content of your blog, a little mystery keeps you fresh.

How to Write Good Blog Post Headlines

If you’re just starting out a blog, one of the biggest keys to your success is getting people to read your blog. The only way you can do that is to capture their interest. While you may have the world’s best blog post, if your headline doesn’t capture their interest it won’t matter. In fact, it would be more beneficial to have an average blog post with a great headline than to have a a poor headline with an amazing blog post. You need to get the potential reader engaged and the only way you can do it is by making them interested at first.

How to Write a Good Headline?

Some of the best headlines you can write deal with numbers and tips.

Example-

5 Tips to Losing Belly Fat and Getting 6-Pack Abs

People love to read tips.  They know that most of the tips they’ll read will be short and concise and what they want. Also, writing about a specific number gives you an idea of how you can outline your blog post. Instead of running into a wall, you’ll know that you need at least 5 tips to make your blog post complete.

Another great way to create an interesting headline is to use a benefit. If you’re writing about weight loss, you want them to see the benefit of losing weight. Such as looking great in a swimsuit.  However, one of the most powerful headlines you can use is the benefit+curiosity to create a  headline that will guarantee to get read.

Example-

3 Unwritten Rules to Losing Weight and Looking Great in a Bikini.

This is a great example of a benefit+curiosity based headline. They’ll want to find out what the “Unwritten Rules” are and they’ll be more likely to open your blog post and to read it. It’s also important to have a sexy headline so people looking at RSS feeds will be able to  see it. If your headline isn’t interesting to them, there is no way they’re going to click on it.

How To Write Product Reviews For Your Blog

Writing a product review is a great way to not only drive targeted traffic to your blog, but it’s also a chance for you to distinguish yourself as someone who truly cares about giving an unbiased review about the products he or she tries out; however, there are some tips you should consider following if you are going to be writing successful product reviews.

The first and most important rule that you need to remember while writing a product review is not to sell or push it; instead of descriptions and opinions based on what you have experienced with the product. Second of all, you must keep your target audience in mind and change your writing style according to that: for example, if you are selling some type of high-end electronic for experts then you will want to keep the review very factual and straight to the point. Third of all, while it does seem tempting, you should refrain from pointing out that your product is clearly better than all the competition because: first of all it simply sounds like a phony and cheesy cliché, and second of all you will actually give your competition some recognition and your potential clients may be tempted to check it out.

When writing a product review on your blog, people are mostly going to read it to find out whether your experience with the product was conclusive, so don’t spend time being vague and making meaningless statements; give your customers what they are asking for.

Finally, remember to finish every product review with a mild call to action that would invite your potential customers to either learn more about the product, or directly buy it; otherwise, the people reading your content will simply be likely to go back to their search engine of choice and look for the product manufacturer’s official website.

How To Make Your Blog Posts Go Viral

Some bloggers do it by accident when they make posts that suddenly go viral and popular in the Internet.  If you are looking for ways on how to make your blog posts go viral, however, then it is obvious that you do not want to make it accidental.

Yes, you can proactively make it happen.

1. Pick the Right Topic

Some subjects are just better built for blogosphere greatness than others.  Viral topics are either those that are useful or controversial.  Issues where you can make a well-informed stand are good topics to initially work on.  Keep yourself updated with current events and trends and jump on the opportunity once you sense the opportunity to strike.

2. Do Your Research

A viral blog post needs content that is full of useful information.  Unless you are well-versed in the topic of your choice, you will need to research to provide this.  Before you even write your first few sentences, make sure that you have spent about 10 minutes or so researching.  This can also help you make a compelling headline and introduction about your topic.

3. Dedicate Time to Your Headline and Introduction

Your blog post’s title and introduction are the first things that a reader is going to see.  Your title and introduction should be catchy, informative, and concise.  Take a look at past blog posts that have left a mark in your chosen topic and observe how their titles are constructed.  Titles that shock but give appropriate justification later on often make it to the halls of fame.

4. Interact

Blogs are good avenues for interaction with people that you would normally not talk with in public.  The world is full people coming from different backgrounds and opinions.  Some of these opinions may contradict the position of your blog post, but take time to interact with them and grow your online home to a budding community.  It is by this time when you have really learned how to make your blog posts go viral.  As an added bonus, you may have also established online connections that could last for years.

Coming Up With Content Ideas For Blog Posts

When you’re getting started with blogging, sometimes it can be difficult to come up with enough topics to write about. This can be a form of writers block that prevents you from even deciding on a topic to write about. However, if you know the right places to look, you will discover that the topics you can write about really are unlimited.

The first thing you should do is start a list. Anytime you come up with an idea for a future post, write it down somewhere. You should even keep a paper and pencil next to your bed because sometimes the best ideas happen late at night or when you first wake up. You may think that you will be able to remember your great idea but it usually doesn’t happen that way – write it down. You should also keep this list visible as a constant reminder that you’re looking for possible topics. Once you get into a habit of keeping track of your ideas, you list will eventually become large enough so you have multiple topics to pick from.

Visiting several websites that are related to your topic is another way to come up with ideas for your blog. An easy way to do this is to subscribe to an RSS feed or set your home page to show the latest headlines from these websites. Once a week, scan the headlines and look for ideas to add to your list. Sometimes it will be helpful to also keep track of the url for the article you saw to use as a reference when you start writing your blog post.

Looking at forums and communities related to your niche is another place to look for ideas. Find out what everyone else is talking about. Better yet, find out what they are asking questions about, then you can answer those questions in a blog post.
